0537Frank Dye and His Wayfarer Dinghy "Wanderer"This very extensive archive contains material in 5 main categories - log books; media (cine, VHS tapes, audio cassette); transparencies in various formats; paper and other memorabilia; and photographs.
Frank sailed his small 16 foot dinghy extensively around the UK, across the North Sea around Scandinavia, all the way to Iceland and Greenland, and over a number of years all the way up the east coast of America from Florida to Canada and all the way round into the Great Lakes. His wife, Margaret, joined him on many of these voyages.
There are 28 log books covering everything from mundane day to day activities to his exciting and dangerous open ocean voyages in Wanderer, his 15' 10" (4.82m) open Wayfarer dinghy. The log books cover 1958 to 2000 but not all years.
We have many thousands of transparencies taken throughout his life; on holiday, at work, sailing, relaxing, travelling. Sadly in many cases it is difficult to identify locations or people depicted.
The photograph archive contains over 50 items, many of which are photo wallets or albums that contain many individual photos.
In addition we have a variety of 16mm cine films, a VHS tape of an interview given in America, and other papers, and material. At present we are intending to digitise these archives.
This very extensive archive tells us much about Frank, and in particular about boat handling and sailing a very small open dinghy in seas and places that most people would view as foolhardy. Nevertheless, Frank’s log books show a very considered and careful consideration of the preparation, provisioning, planning, and boat handling necessary before undertaking such voyages
