The National Maritime Museum Cornwall holds an archive of boat plans, documents and photographs relating to the maritime history of Cornwall and the development and use of boats. Some of the archives are small – barely a single photograph – others are very large. Below is a small sample of the main archives at fonds level with a brief description. You can view the archives by making an appointment with our curator via email to:

0067 Falmouth Tribute Fund Record 1939-1945 A list of men and women who served, and who gave their lives in HM Forces and Merchant Navy in WW2 from Falmouth. The surviving men and women had a choice of a cigarette box, tankard and tray, each engraved with the Borough coat-of-arms and the words ‘1939-45. Falmouth’s Token of Appreciation.’ The token of remembrance for the next of kin of those who gave their lives was a salver in sterling silver, with the name inscribed. There is also a copy of the Falmouth Tribute Fund book held in The Bartlett – 942.378FAL.

It contains a series of photographs of the Duke of Edinburgh at the helm of the Endeavour in which Ken and Terry Pearce won the Folkestone to Boulogne Cross Channel Sailing Dinghy Championship in 1958. There is also extensive information on the Dart class of catamaran, including its trials for the International Yacht Racing Union in the USA. The archive also contains information on other catamarans including the Shearwater III, Tornado and the Flying Dutchman.

0146 National 12 A collection of letters from C Leslie Lewis, who played a key role in the development of the National 12 yacht. The letters include some from the Yacht Racing Association, Morgan Giles Boat Builders and several letters from Uffa Fox, a boat designer and sailing enthusiast. The letters all talk about the costs, measurements, weights, classes and materials needed for the National 12 as well as how it could be adopted into the Yacht Racing Association.

0165 Hooper As a young man, William Tregonning Hooper was apprenticed to work for a steamship company; beginning a lifelong maritime career in which he would eventually rise to the rank of Captain. In 1934, as a young man, he travelled home to England from Australia aboard the barque Favell, under Captain Sten Lille.
This archive relates to Hooper and his career, and spans several decades, comprising of items such as his original apprentice’s indenture, correspondence, diary, various newspaper clippings and photographs

0527 Angove V This archive comprises a collection of tranparencies and scanned photographs of boats built and repaired by Vic Angove, traditional boatbuilder of Falmouth (12.04.1927 to 06.11.2001). Donated to the National Maritime Museum Cornwall by Colin Angove and Lynne Vosper, Vic’s son and daughter in November 2012.

The Collection includes 100 transparencies and 80 photographs of ‘Lyonesse’, a 28-ft Falmouth Working Boat designed by Percy Dalton, and 28 photographs of the restoration of ‘Otter’, a 33-ft gaff cutter that was built in 1912 by James Angear of Looe. Vic was Chairman of Penryn Rowing Club for over 25 years and built four 18-ft Flashboats for the Club and the collection includes the launch of the ‘An Gof’ and the ‘Carly Louise’.

Part of the archive relates to her career in WW2 and other albums are relevant to her world wide travels to Europe, South and North America in the late 1930s

Frank Peters designed and built Aileen in 1923, the highly successful forerunner of the present day St Mawes One Design and a boat that is now in The National Maritime Museum Cornwall’s collection. He had been part of a family which had built boats in St. Mawes at Freshwater Boatyard for some two hundred years. Indeed the firm was very well known for having built most of the original pilot gigs used so extensively particularly around the Isles of Scilly

0551 Bill of Lading, 1738 This Bill is dated 14 October 1738 and relates to the cargo of the packet ship, Prince Frederick. Three different versions of this bill were made out, which allowed for the cargo to be dispatched at alternative points. The Captain of the ship is listed as Robert Lovell and the bill is signed by him. Lovell went on to become High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1759

0558 Official opening of the Queen Elizabeth Dry Dock in 1958 This album contains thirty black and white images illustrating the Duke’s visit to the docks, and depict him meeting the Mayor of Falmouth and directors and staff of the docks. During his visit, the Duke also spent some time on the water in a craft named ‘Bentfield’, before listening to an address by H.A.J. Silley of Silley, Cox & Co. The album, with a red leather covering and gold inscription, was produced by The Falmouth Docks and Engineering Company to celebrate the occasion. See also 0581 for more images

This is a complete archive that could be used to build this dinghy

Other documents, such as invitations to freemason Lodge meetings and a Madras City Police dance, give a glimpse into the social life of British personnel in India during this time

0575 The ‘Barham Bibles’ It is thought that these volumes of books of the Bible were first used by James Bull, commander of the Falmouth Packet Grantham, from 1778-1797. The front cover is embossed ‘James Bull Sen.r’. Inside this volume reads, ‘Major Bull 56th Reg.t’. John James Bull was born around 1822-23 and served in the Army around 1840-1870, becoming a captain in 1851 and a detached Lieutentant Colonel by 1871. These volumes were used by the Bull family as part of their worship and are important to the Falmouth Packet story

The condition is excellent throughout, the photographs being completely undamaged, bright and very detailed. 0593 Hodge D G This collection comprises newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, papers, a sketch book and Ship’s Log relating to a group of four men (including Donald Hodge) who purchased the yacht “Content” in 1948 and set sail to go around the world. The ship’s log covers the period May 1948 to 17th May 1949. The plan was hatched in 1947 with the intention of creating a scientific expedition that would undertake commissions to carry out various research activities around the world. The proposed company did not materialise but four of the main participants decided to purchase “Content” and carry out the plan to sail around the world

0633 Cinefilm of the Fal Estuary and Carrick Roads 1939-1960s by Norman Goodyear This cinefilm is taken from 18 separate films. They were transferred to VHS tape and then copied onto DVD format. There are 4 chapters, organised into Falmouth in the late 1930s, Falmouth in 1946-1949, Falmouth in the 1950s and Falmouth in the 1960s. The duration of the footage is approximately 30 minutes in total. It is a mixture of colour and black and white and has no sound.
Much of the footage has been identified and further research is being carried out to provide exact dates and locations for each of the clips

The next part of the document details the Penzance Corporation Act of 1883, including the Harbours Docks and Piers clauses Act, 1847, signed by Thomas Cornish, the Town Clerk and the Directions and Regulations as to Vessels entering and using the Dock, signed by John Morrish, the Harbour Master

0274 Tom Weller and Professor and Mrs Jenks Old Curiosity Shop collection This is a collection of original and copy documents relating to John Burton’s Old Curiosity Shop, one of the best known of Falmouth’s shops. It includes a newspaper clipping, bill of sale, photographs and postcards. There is also a collection of tokens from the shop in the object collection. The items were collected by Tom Weller and bought by Prof and Mrs Jenks to go into the museum’s collections.
