Maritime History from the Bartlett Maritime Museum

A warm welcome...

This site has been created by the team in the Bartlett Research Centre at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall for those interested in maritime history. It covers a broad range of topics and is designed for all, although we will admit to a prejudice for our own favourites: the maritime history of Cornwall and the history of boats.

Look out for the Packet Surgeon’s diaries. These charmingly written pieces give a good view of the life of a Packet ship in the early 19th century, seen through the eyes of a young Scottish surgeon. His description of a crossing the line ceremony shows that life on board has not changed much down the centuries.

Our Trafalgar section includes two little known stories of the aftermath of the great battle while the aptly named ‘Others’ section contains odds and ends of interest.

The article entitled British Yachts and Yachtsmen contains a transcription of a 1907 book. This charts the growth of the sport, and catalogues some of the individuals and leading yachts of the day, at a time when the sport was unashamedly the preserve of the upper classes.

The article on the Cammillieri pictures describes the work of pierhead painter Nicholas Cammillieri who painted some Falmouth Packets as they entered or left Malta.

Our specialist publication Troze is a refereed journal which appears approximately quarterly.
