Voyage 5 – Mediterranean 1830

James’ illustration of a parlatoria

Journal of a Voyage from Falmouth to the Mediterranean

Sailed 8th January – Returned 30th March 1830

Absent 11 weeks & 5 days

We discover a more confident traveller in James’ fifth voyage. He recognises that he is now more comfortable when leaving loved ones at home and puts this down to the fact that “I have performed 4 voyages, and know somewhat of the sea …” On this voyage he encounters pirates, turtles, a gentleman “as mad as a march hare” and a steam Packet ship. As if this wasn’t eventful enough, “defensive & offensive preparations were judged to be necessary”aboard the Duke of York on the way home.
