Thornycroft, Sir John I., LLD., F.R.S.

Was born in 1843, and educated at Glasgow University. He founded the shipbuilding works at Chiswick in 1866, and has succeeded in introducing many improvements in naval architecture and marine engineering. He has published a number of papers bearing on the subject of high-speed craft. He is Vice-President of the Institute of Naval Architects. He is devoted to small-boat sailing. He is owner of the Sibbick-built lugger Ariel, 4 tons.
